Building A Plate Your Skin Can Use

This is not a diet article, because diets end. It is a way of arranging an ordinary plate so that the nutrients skin is physically built from turn up most days without anyone having to think about it.

Why Food Beats A Bottle Here

Food delivers nutrients in combination, in a matrix that affects how they are absorbed, alongside fibre and compounds nobody has finished cataloguing. Beta-carotene from a carrot converts at a rate your body regulates, so you cannot overdo it; preformed vitamin A from supplements does not work that way, which is exactly why our vitamin A page carries a ceiling warning.

We sell a supplement and we will still tell you that food is the better route wherever it is achievable. A supplement is a floor, not a replacement.

The Plate

Half of it is plants, and more than one colour

Colour is a rough proxy for the compound that produces it. Orange and deep yellow means carotenoids. Dark green means folate, magnesium and lutein. Red and purple means anthocyanins. Aiming for three colours in a day is a more useful instruction than any gram target, because people actually follow it.

A quarter is protein

Skin, hair and nails are protein. Keratin and collagen are assembled from amino acids and there is no route around supplying them. Oily fish twice a week covers protein and vitamin D and omega-3 fats in one decision, which is the highest return single change available to most people.

A quarter is a whole grain or a starchy vegetable

Whole grains carry B vitamins, zinc and fibre. The zinc in grains and legumes is partly bound by phytates, which soaking, sprouting and fermenting reduce — the reason traditional preparation methods look like superstition and are not.

Fat is present, deliberately

Four nutrients on our panel are fat soluble and cannot be absorbed without it. Olive oil on the vegetables is not a garnish, it is what makes the carotenoids in them available. This is also why we suggest taking Gelagen near a meal.

What To Do With That Table

Read down it and mark the rows where you eat none of the listed foods in a normal week. Those are your gaps. Most people find one or two, not eight, and the honest conclusion for many readers is that their diet already covers most of this.

That conclusion costs us a sale and it is the correct one. A supplement earns its place where a gap genuinely exists — a narrow diet, an excluded food group, a northern winter, a stressful stretch when cooking stopped.

The Sugar Question

There is reasonable evidence linking high-glycaemic diets to acne, and rather weaker evidence for the broader claims made about sugar and skin ageing. We are not going to overstate it. Reducing a diet built mostly on refined carbohydrate is worth doing for many reasons, and skin is a minor one among them.

Questions

Quick Answers

Does dairy cause acne?

The evidence is mixed and points more at skimmed milk than at dairy generally. If you suspect it, remove it for eight weeks and reintroduce it deliberately rather than guessing forever.

Do I need to drink more water?

Adequate hydration matters; extra water beyond adequate does not visibly plump skin. Persistent thirst and dark urine are the signals worth acting on.

Are supplements pointless if I eat well?

Largely, yes, for most of this panel, and we say so on several pages. They earn their place where a gap exists.
